A warning about Amendment 2

Dear Editor, On Nov. 8, West Virginia voters will decide whether or not to approve Amendment 2, which if approved, will allow the state legislature to eliminate tangible personal property taxes for businesses as well as the personal property tax for vehicles, without an agreed upon plan to make up at least $500 million a year in lost revenue for counties, cities and schools. This is the definition of fiscal irresponsibility. What will happen if our state budget surplus turns into a deficit? Where do you think the money will come from to make up the deficit? IWLA extends gratitude

Dear Editor, On behalf of the Mountaineer Chapter of IWLA, we would like to thank the many who attended our annual Buckwheat Feed on Oct. 9. This event is one of the chapter’s main fund raiser, along with our Fall Raffle. The day’s weather was perfect, and we served approx. 300 people, some visitors from Maine and Tennessee. Gov. Justice, The seniors in Pocahontas County thought we had your ear when we met with your director of constituent services, Jason Williams, and his regional helper, Lynn Phillips. At our meeting they were told the North Fork Senior Center in Pendleton County was about to close, and probably many more throughout the state of West Virginia. Now two months later, the closure has happened. Concerned about cats

About three years ago a stray cat came to where I live. The cat had five kittens. I called the Humane Society in Elkins. They said they would take the kittens but never did. I called and sent text messages. Never heard from them again. Now another stray cat had kittens on my porch. The momma cat got hit by a car and was killed. On the morning of Oct. 6, I called the so-called Humane Society and told them I had six kittens, their eyes barely open, and that the momma cat was killed by a car. Remember farm animals’ special day

I just learned about World Day for Farmed Animals, coming up on Sunday, Oct. 2 (Gandhi’s birth date). It has been around since 1983 and is meant to memorialize the billions of animals abused and killed for food each year. Like many, I always considered farm animals only as a source of food. But, after recently watching the documentary “Speciesism,” I realized that farm animals are much like our family pets, deserving of love and respect.
