Rosie the Riveters are recognized

As summer has passed us by, Our Town, Inc. has many community groups and individuals to thank and recognize for making the summer 2021 program Our Nation, Our People, Our Town a success. First there are the downtown businesses and groups that donated window spaces and created window displays to commemorate our national holidays and local events which served as a summer window museum to remind us who we were and who we are. Appreciation goes to the following for their visual displays: Beverly Elementary School students, Davis & Elkins College Art Department, Davis & Elkins College ...

Why aren’t citizens getting vaccinated?

People are still wondering why the citizens of our state and nearly a dozen others are not getting vaccinated. Well, it’s a couple things. Consider the fact that most are conservatives who don’t trust anything they hear coming out of Washington (there’s merit in that) and many liberals who are growing wary of the power-wielding bureaucrats who demand we do this or that or don’t do this or that or don’t do anything till we tell you what to do, then do that. I don’t know what name you call it, but it translates to eventual total government control. Just ask the credible ...

Reader: A CDC miscount, or a lie?

Why lie about the numbers? Is it because we are a red state? There is a new virus in America. This time, it didn’t come from China. It’s a deadly disease that originated in the Washington D.C. swamp. When a columnist claims that we’re in a pandemic of the un-vaccinated it’s simply untrue. Left wing columnists who support government mandates at all levels, have done tremendous damage to America in its response to COVID-19. We have been lied to about where it originated, who is at risk of being seriously affected by it, and the risk of transmission among healthy people ...

Will football lights be a problem for airport?

With all the news about the new Elkins High School football field being moved to the high school. I was wondering if everyone forgot the controversy when they had to install the lights for the current soccer field. Does anyone remember there was a big discussion about the height of the lights and the Federal Aviation Administration because of the airport. HUM, well it just makes me wonder. Now I played football for Elkins and I know there are a lot of other guys who have played but I have yet to see any conversation again about the height of the lights. Anyone who has played ...

Beverly Elementary praised for response

Schools and communities across the nation struggled to connect with students and families during the pandemic. For the rural communities in West Virginia, this was especially true. Beverly Elementary in Randolph County responded to the pandemic in a way that supported both students and families. The staff implemented “Tuesday Talks” which offered their families an opportunity to engage in collaboration with local agencies and partners. “Tuesday Talks” were scheduled at 12:30 p.m. during the lunch hour, as a time to reach as many parents and caregivers as possible. ...

Reader asks Manchin to vote for budget bill

As a West Virginia resident and person who has family in West Virginia, I unfortunately will have to leave the state unless Sen. Manchin votes for budget reconciliation. One of West Virginia’s largest issues is that young people like myself are leaving the state after college because they are unable to find good jobs here, especially jobs that have our future in mind. Budget reconciliation has become a ray of hope for us youth to remain in West Virginia. Even West Virginia University President Dr. Gordon Gee, is concerned, saying “I’ve joked about the fact that I want to build ...
