ELKINS — Two Elkins High School students have been recognized for their academic achievements in a national scholarship program.

Luke Anger and Annmarie Raschella, seniors at EHS, were recently named semifinalists in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. Anger and Raschella are two of 16,000 semifinalists being recognized across the country.

“Annmarie and Luke are phenomenal students,” EHS Principal Carla Lambert told The Inter-Mountain. “They excel at academics but also are involved in numerous other extra curricular activities that we offer. We are lucky to have them as students at Elkins High School.”

In order to qualify for this honor, students are required to take the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The 16,000 semifinalists represent less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States.

Anger is a member of the Elkins High School swim, cross country and track teams. In each sport, Anger has earned honors and participated in state championship meets. In addition to extra curricular activities, Anger has also participated in the West Virginia State Mathematics Field Day and West Virginia Science Bowl.

Raschella is a member of the National Honor Society, EHS Student Government Association and serves as captain of the EHS Speech and Debate Team. Raschella has also participated in the West Virginia State Mathematics Field Day and West Virginia Science Bowl.

To become a finalist in the scholarship program, each semifinalist must complete a detailed application which highlights information about their academic record, academic honors and awards, involvement in community activities, leadership abilities and employment.

Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, according to a press release provided by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis, according to the press release. In addition, approximately 180 colleges and universities will finance 4,000 awards for finalists who attend the sponsor institution. Finalists will be notified of their achievement in Feb. 2022.
