Suddenlink says fiber optics vandalized
ELKINS — Suddenlink officials said Monday the two-day internet, cable and phone service outage experienced in Elkins and Beverly starting on Christmas Day was the result of vandalism to a fiber optic line.
“The cause of the outage is related to a cut fiber line that upon investigation appears to have been an act of vandalism, which we’ve reported to the authorities,” Ashwin Bhandari, the director of communications for Altice USA, the parent company for Suddenlink, told The Inter-Mountain in an email Monday.
“Our crews worked over the holiday to repair the damage and restore service to our customers,” said Bhandari, who is based in Long Island City, New York.
“Vandalism is a very unfortunate event out of our control, so we wanted you and our customers to be aware.”
Suddenlink customers in Elkins and Beverly experienced an outage at about 5:20 p.m. Christmas Day. Suddenlink representatives said at the time that the outage was created by a fiberoptics problem, and that internet, cable and phone services would be back up and running by 8 p.m.
The outage continued, however, and customers were told the services would be restored by 1 a.m. The outage continued through the night, however, and services were finally restored at about 1 p.m. Sunday.
Customers then reported that Suddenlink services went down again just before 4 p.m. Sunday, and remained down throughout the evening.
At 9:45 p.m., a Suddenlink representative said a “fiber optic break” in the Elkins area was being repaired by service technicians, and that services should be restored by 2 a.m. Monday.
“We are still working to resolve this issue,” the representative said. “We appreciate your patience.”
Suddenlink services were restored late Sunday evening.
Shentel internet customers in Barbour County were also without service through the day Sunday and into Sunday evening.
