Take Advantage of Sales Tax Holiday

Don’t look now, but the start of school really is right around the corner. For those who have not started back-to-school shopping yet, this weekend presents the perfect opportunity to save a little money. Friday through Aug. 7 is the annual Sales Tax Holiday in West Virginia.

On those days, items exempt from the sales and use tax include:

Certain clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less; certain school supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less; certain school instruction material with a purchase price of $20 or less; certain laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less; and certain sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less, according to the governor’s office.

That means customers can save at least 6% on those purchases, and maybe 7% if they are shopping in municipalities with local sales taxes as well.

There are some exceptions of course. For example, “clothing” does not mean handbags or umbrellas, or “costume masks sold separately.” Find out more at tax.wv.gov/Business/Pages/SalesTaxHoliday.aspx.

But once you have read up, go take advantage of the savings, where ever you prefer to shop. According to the state Tax Division, “The sales tax holiday is set by law and vendors must comply.”

The start of the school year may be the start of any number of other expenses for parents and guardians. Don’t miss this weekend’s chance to make sure your kids have everything they need, for a little less.

Starting at $3.92/week.
