Senator cagers drop first two tilts

GRAND VALLEY, Mich. — The Davis & Elkins College men’s basketball team dropped games at Ferris State and Grand Valley State over the weekend to start the 2019-20 campaign.

The Senators fell to Ferris State, 85-58, on Saturday and lost an 84-68 verdict to Grand Valley State on Sunday.

Erkam Kiris had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in Sunday’s setback.

Myles Monroe led D&E with 18 points, followed by Donte Doleman with 14.

Jake Van Tubbergen led four players in double figures for Grand Valley State (2-0) with 20 points.

D&E will make its home debut at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Ohio Valley.

Pitt-Johnstown 78, Wesleyan 68

INDIANA, Pa. — West Virginia Wesleyan fell to Pitt-Johnstown, 78-68, Saturday in IRMC/Hilton Garden Classic play.

The Bobcats (0-2) lost a 75-52 decision to host Indiana (Pa.) on Friday night.

Dusan Vicentic posted a double-double in Saturday’s loss, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Luka Petrovic also reached double figures with 10 points.

John Paul Kromka bucketed 13 points for the winners.

Wesleyan will entertain Salem University at 7 p.m. today.

Ferris State 77, AB 73

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Alderson Broaddus placed four players in double figures but it wasn’t enough as Ferris State claimed a 77-73 win on Sunday.

Malik Bocook scored 20, K.J. Walker 15, Bruce Spruell 12 and David Shriver 10 for the Battlers (0-2), who lost a 69-56 verdict at Grand Valley State on Saturday.

Walt Kelser had 17 points for Ferris State (4-0).

AB will entertain Seton Hill at 6 p.m. Saturday in the home opener.

Women’s games

Mansfield 73, D&E 70

INDIANA, Pa. — Davis & Elkins suffered a 73-70 setback to Mansfield in its second game of the PSAC-MEC Challenge on Sunday.

The Lady Senators (0-2) had lost an 81-52 decision to nationally ranked IUP in their first game on Saturday.

Jamiyah Johnson had 19 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double in Sunday’s loss. Jay Kilpatrick added a team-high 20 points and Sydney Nestor chipped in with 11 points to go along with eight caroms.

D&E will open the home portion of the schedule at 2 p.m. Saturday against Shepherd.

IUP 96, Wesleyan 44

INDIANA, Pa. — Indiana (Pa.) posted a 96-44 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on the final day of the PSAC-MEC Challenge on Sunday afternoon.

Nicole Gilyard was the lone player in double figures for the Lady Bobcats (1-1) with 10 points.

Justina Mascaro paced the winners with 19 points, while Natalie Myers netted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

In Saturday’s 71-61 win over Mansfield, Brittany Stawovy fired in 20 points and Malaika Kimmons had 12 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double effort for Wesleyan, which will host Shippensburg at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Lake Superior State 84, AB 77

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Hannah Henderson scored 21 points for Alderson Broaddus in an 84-77 loss to Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon.

Shay Harper also reached double figures with 18 points.

Jenna Gregory led the hosts with 19 points.

The Lady Battlers (0-2) also lost a 66-49 decision to the University of Indianapolis on Friday night.

AB entertains Pitt-Johnstown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
