CLARKSBURG — As time expired in Tuesday night’s Class AAA, Region II co-final, Philip Barbour’s players jumped for joy and into the school’s history books.

The Lady Colts (14-8) earned the first-ever girls state tournament berth in school history with a 52-49 win over Robert C. Byrd.

Philip Barbour is the seventh seed and will face second-seed Logan (22-2) at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The Lady Colts trailed 38-36 before going on a 7-0 run to take a 43-38 lead after a 3-pointer by LaDonna Herron with 4 minutes left in regulation. They didn’t trail again from that point.

RCB cut the deficit to 50-49 with under 10 seconds left after Avery Childers hit two of three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt.

But Braylyn Sparks hit two foul shots with 3.1 ticks remaining and the Lady Flying Eagles were unable to connect on the other end.

RCB ended the season with a 16-9 record.

Starting at $3.92/week.
