Applemen spoil Tigers’ Senior Night

ELKINS — Musselman handed Elkins a 50-36 setback on Senior Night Friday evening at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The Tigers, who honored seniors Brock Holland, Griffin Boggs, Caleb Ray and Matthew Mahoney, trailed 11-8 after the first quarter and 28-16 at the intermission.

Elkins cut the lead to under single digits late in the third quarter, outscoring the Applemen, 17-14, in the frame to trail 42-33 entering the final quarter.

But the Tigers were limited to just three points in the fourth quarter.

Holland was the lone player in double figures for Elkins with 16 points.

Gavin McClain led Musselman with 15 points, followed by Anden Santamaria with 15.

The Tigers, who ended the regular season 6-16, are the third seed in the Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 tourney and will visit No. 2 Robert C. Byrd at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Top-seed Liberty entertains No. 4 Lincoln in the other semifinal contest on Tuesday.

The title game is set for Friday at the highest-remaining seed.

In the Region II, Section 1 tournament, fourth-seed Philip Barbour visits two-time state champion and top-seed Fairmont Senior on Tuesday and No. 3 Grafton travels to No. 2 East Fairmont.

The winners will square off at 7 p.m. Thursday at the highest-remaining seed.
