Elkins and Philip Barbour compete in Class AA action

CHARLESTON — Area track and field teams competed in the state meet held Friday and Saturday at Laidley Field.

In the Class AA boys meet, Philip Barbour placed 10th with 23 points and Elkins was 11th (22).

Nate Hulver placed second in the 400-meter dash (22.96) and was third in the 200 (22.96) for the Colts. Teammate Drew Morral finished fifth in the 100 (11.53).

Elkins’ Caleb Ray was fourth in the 200 (23.29).

In the 800, the Tigers’ Trevor George was eighth (2:04.65), Johnathan Dean 10th (2:06.62) and Ben Tenney 11th (2:06.71).

George tallied a fifth-place showing in the 1,600 (4:28.76), Tenney was ninth (4:36.22) and Bodkins 11th (4:39.64).

In the 3,200, George was sixth (9:53.66), Tenney eighth (10:00.75) and Gavin Brown 12th (10:12.86).

Elkins’ 4×100 relay of J.J. Cepeda, Nick Bowers, Ray and Demarcus Franklin placed ninth in a time of 46.11, while the Colts’ Hulver, Kevin Knotts, Cam Bennett and Morral finished 12th (46.58).

Knotts, Patrick Webster, Brandan Carpenter and Bennett placed 13th in the 4×200 relay in a time of 1:38.46.

The team of Dean, Brown, Bodkins and Andres Masten turned in a ninth-place effort in the 4×400 relay in a time of 3:44.06.

Tenney, Bodkins, Dean and George were runner-ups in the 4×800 with an effort of 8:21.03.

In the field events, PB’s Webster was ninth in the high jump (5-08), Keaton “Beef” McDermott was fifth in the shot put (47-07.50), Nick Tustin was eighth (45-08.00) and John McGee 12th (43-10-50).

McGee was ninth in the discus (129-01) and McDermott 11th (123-11).

The Tigers’ Ben Carbaugh was 16th in the discus (103-10).

Winfield won the team title with 123 points. Point Pleasant (94), Frankfort (67), Weir (47) and Poca (43.50) rounded out the top five.

“I’m very proud of our team’s showing at the state meet,” EHS boys coach Shane Richardson said. “When you get to Charleston, everyone is good — but our athletes proved we can compete with the best and bring home some medals.”

In the Class AA girls event, Elkins tied for 14th with 19 points.

Emilia Tenney led the Lady Tigers with third-place finishes in the 1,600 (5:29.42) and the 800 (2:26.81).

The 4×800 meter relay of Tenney, Delia White, Mallory Bennett and Julia Biola took fifth (10:25.43), while the 4×400 (Tenney, Emma Gilbert, Biola and Ziah George) was seventh in a time of 4:27.74.

Biola was eighth in the 1,600 (5:41.06) and 10th in the 800 (2:31.96),

For Philip Barbour, Lily Miller was 15th in the 1,600 (5:49.95) and 10th in the 3,200 (12:34.09). Teammate Kayla Baker was 15th (13:13.92) in the 3,200.

The 4×800 unit of Brooklyn Chappell, Baker, Phaedra Payne and Lily Miller was 11th (11:04.82).

In the field events, Elkins’ Elizabeth Jones was 16th in the long jump (14-06.75) and PB’s Preslea Miller 13th (14-11.50).

The Lady Colts’ Kacey Cutright was 13th in the discus (89-02) and Elkins’ Katherine Hinchman 15th (87-07).

Winfield took team honors with 99.83, while Oak Glen (72), Weir (67), Grafton (56) and Fairmont Senior (34) rounded out the top five.

“For our boys to score 22 points at the state meet is pretty remarkable considering they scored zero last year,” EHS girls coach Scott Biola said. “The same can be said for our girls, who scored 19 this year after returning only one athlete (Elizabeth Jones) who scored at states last year.”

In the Class A portion of the state meet, Tygarts Valley’s Rommie Shumate was sixth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.94, while Tucker County’s Lela Wright was seventh in 17.08.

The Lady Mountain Lions’ Katie Hick was fifth in the 400 (1:01.77).

Wright, Hicks, Maya Gross and Addi Moats placed fourth in the 4×400 relay in a time of 4:26.28.

Williamstown won the team title with 134 points.

For the boys, Tucker County’s Nate Ricottilli was 12th in the 400 (54.81).

Logan Kopec, Allen Collar, Liam Davis and Ryan Scott placed 10th in the shuttle hurdle relay for the Mountain Lions in a time of 1:09.94.

Buffalo won the team title with 118 points.
