Lady Tiger swimmers repeat as Big 10 champs
BRIDGEPORT — The Elkins High School swim teams will enter regional competition with some momentum after their performances in Saturday’s Big 10 Conference Championships held at The Bridge Sports Complex.
The defending state champion Lady Tigers won their second straight league banner with 131 points.
Bridgeport followed with 114 points. The remainder of the field included Fairmont Senior (97), Robert C. Byrd (47), Buckhannon-Upshur (39), Philip Barbour (30), Grafton (19), Liberty and Lincoln (12) and East Fairmont (4).
Elkins swept the relay events, as the team of freshman Aleah Irons, junior Emma Ujvagi and sophomores Lilly Irons and Lilly Anger won the 200-yard medley in a time of 1:58.41, Ujvagi, sophomore Sophia Rhodes, Aleah Irons and Anger took the 200 freestyle (1:47.13) and Lilly Irons, sophomore Leah Ours, Rhodes and Anger the 400 freestyle (3:58.67).
Individually, Lilly Irons captured the league title in 100 freestyle (54.95) and was third in the 200 freestyle (2:05.59), Anger won the 50 freestyle (25.91), Ujvagi was runner-up in both the 200 IM (2:28.64) and 100 backstroke (1:07.89) and Aleah Irons second in the 100 butterfly (1:06.34) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.03).
Philip Barbour was led by senior MacKenna Halfin, who was second in the 50 freestyle (25.95) and third in the 100 freestyle (58.31).
Junior Mallory Hughes placed third in the 50 freestyle (27.09) for B-U.
The Elkins boys finished third with 76 points. Bridgeport (191) took the title, with Fairmont Senior placing second with 85 points.
RCB (76), Liberty (17), Grafton (16), Philip Barbour (8), East Fairmont (4) and B-U (2) rounded out the scoring.
Isaac Anger won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:00.10 for the Tigers.
The senior standout was also second in the 50 freestyle (21.77) and teamed with freshmen Shepherd Jackson and Joel Casto and senior Andres Masten to place third in the 200 medley relay (1:52.28) and with Masten, sophomore Briar Higgins and Casto in recording a third-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.56).
Masten was second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.61) and third in 100 butterfly (59.92).
The Region III meet will be held at The Bridge Sports Complex this Saturday.
The state meet is set for Feb. 20-21 at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown.
