Coaching Carousel

Some familiar West Virginia faces are in new places

MORGANTOWN — The 2025 coaching carousel has been one of the craziest in recent memory. There were multiple high-profile job openings, including Florida, LSU, Penn State and recently Michigan. The carousel has had its domino effect, and some familiar West Virginia faces are in new places.

Recently, Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield reportedly hired former Mountaineers quarterback Clint Trickett to be his quarterback coach, according to CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello. Trickett played for WVU for two seasons, 2013-14, and was Jacksonville State’s offensive coordinator last season.

In the two years with WVU, Trickett threw for 4,890 yards and 25 touchdowns. In his final year, he led the Mountaineers to a 7-6 record in 2014.

During his coaching career, Trickett stopped at Marshall in 2021-22, where he was the offensive coordinator. His offense had the Thundering Herd second in the Sun Belt in rushing in his second season. He also spent a year as Georgia Southern’s passing game coordinator.

Just a day before Trickett was on the move, Memphis reportedly hired former WVU co-defensive coordinator ShaDon Brown to be the Tigers’ cornerbacks coach, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Brown was on Virginia’s staff this past season as a senior defensive analyst.

Brown was the Mountaineers’ co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 2021 up until Neal Brown was fired in 2024. Brown helped WVU’s defense finish with three defensive touchdowns in 2022, and improved the defense to allow six fewer points from 2022 to 2023. He also developed All-Big 12 Conference Beanie Bishop Jr.

Prior to WVU, Brown spent two years at Louisville (2019-20) and two years at Colorado (2017-18).

These two moves came almost a week after WVU’s very own running backs coach, Larry Porter, was announced as Auburn’s running backs coach. Porter spent just one year with the Mountaineers and will return to the Tigers coaching staff under new head coach Alex Golesh.

The coaching carousel hasn’t ended either. The Michigan job just opened up, and that could create waves throughout college football, depending on who takes that job. There could be more former WVU players or coaches on the move.

Starting at $3.92/week.
