Prep soccer postseason begins next week

ELKINS — High school soccer postseason play gets underway next week. The Elkins boys will be the third seed in the Class AAA, Region II tournament and will host sixth-seed Lewis County on Tuesday. The victor visits second-seed Robert C. Byrd on Thursday in the six-team region. Bridgeport is the top seed in the region and entertains the winner of Tuesday’s contest between No. 4 Hampshire vs. No. 5 Keyser on Thursday. WHEELING — Tygarts Valley finished fifth in the two-day Class A state golf tournament completed Thursday at Oglebay Park. The Bulldogs carded a team-total 552, 126-over. Wirt County won the title with a 493, +67, with St. Marys (508, +82) placing second, Charleston Catholic (539, +113) third and Gilmer County (543, +117) fourth to round out the top five. MORGANTOWN — West Virginia quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. had a receiver over the middle of the field and took a shot. Hawkins sailed the pass over his head, which would’ve been a walk-in touchdown.
