19 Randolph students attend Boys State

ELKINS — Nineteen Randolph County students attended the 82nd annual American Legion Mountaineer Boys State at Jackson’s Mill.

Cole Arbogast, a Tygarts Valley High School student, is the son of Chad and Beth Arbogast of Beverly. He is sponsored by the Tygarts Valley Lions Club.

He participates in Key Club, golf, basketball and track, and National Honor Society. He plans to join the Air Force.

Elijah Ballantyne, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Crystal Ballantyne of Elkins and the late Peter Ballantyne.

He participates in National Interscholastic Cycling Association, the West Virginia Bike Association, the Personal Finance Club and is an assistant coach of Elkins Elks Babe Ruth baseball. He plans to attend college and become a nurse anesthetist.

Zachary Barrickman, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Brian and Angela Barrickman of Beverly.

He participates in football and wrestling.

Nathaniel Bennett of Elkins, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Brian Bennett and Andrea Lynch.

He participates in Chess Club. He plans to pursue a higher education.

Austin Beverage, a Tygarts Valley High School student, is the son of Brian and Amanda Beverage of Valley Head.

He participates in the Federation of Christian Athletes. He plans to go to college and pursue a career as a power plant operator.

Lane Cutright, a Tygarts Valley High School student, is the son of Denny and Crystal Cutright of Mill Creek.

He participates in band, Guitar Club, Key Club, National Honor Society and student government. He plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University to study software engineering.

Brayden Davis, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Matthew and Sherri Davis of Elkins.

He participates in basketball, football, class council and Outdoor Adventure Club. He plans to pursue a forestry degree.

Jonathan “Tyler” Davis, an Elkins High School student, is the son of John and Shawna Davis of Elkins.

He participates in varsity baseball and honor roll, and is a volunteer Little League coach and umpire. He plans to attend Pierpont Technical College to pursue a career in electricity or gas.

Antony Dong of Elkins, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Jennifer Zhu and Danny Dong.

He participates in cross country, track and field, swimming, Math Field Day and Science Bowl, and is a library volunteer. He plans to attend an engineering college.

Avery Evick of Elkins, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Brent Evick and Meghan McGhee.

He participates in track, student council, class council and Cooking Club, and is a YMCA summer day camp counselor. He plans to attend M.I.T. to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

Devan Fletcher, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Misty and Travis Fletcher of Elkins.

He participates in Seneca Soccer. He plans to further his education.

Warner Gibson of Elkins, a Tygarts Valley High School student, is the son of Rod and Crystal Gibson.

He participates in varsity track, Key Club, National Honor Society, Valley Bend Presbyterian Church and Mountain Eagles 4-H Club. He plans to attend West Virginia University and eventually law school.

Elias Coop Gonzalez, a Tygarts Valley Christian Academy student, is the son of Dwight Coop of Elkins. He is sponsored by Tygart Valley Christian Academy.

He participates in debate team and is a teacher’s assistant, and attends First Church of Christ in Elkins and Summit Church. He plans to attend a college or a military academy.

Anthony Jones, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Larry and Linda Jones of Elkins.

He participates in baseball, soccer, track and is an Eagle Scout. He plants to attend school to study agricultural/diesel technology.

Elijah Jones, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Amy Kittle of Elkins.

He participates in cross country, swim team, National Honor Society, the Old Brick Playhouse, and is a volunteer soccer referee and coach, and is a lifeguard at the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA. He plans to join the military or attend coach.

Zachary Miller, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Shawn and Melissa Miller of Coalton.

He participates in basketball and Skills USA, and helps with Mountain Hospice charity and umpires Little League games. He plans to attend college.

Liam Purkey, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Gene and Lisa Purkey of Elkins.

He participates in band, student government and Boys Scout Troop 88. He plans to attend West Virginia University to major in mechanical engineering.

Richard Shryock is the son of Richard and Hillary Shryock of Elkins.

He participates in track and field and is a member of Presbyterian Davis Memorial Church. He plans to attend West Virginia University and study either natural science or political science.

Griffen Westerfeld of Elkins, an Elkins High School student, is the son of Melinda Kota and Patrick Westerfeld.

He participates in student government. He plans to pursue a degree in computer science.
