Dyer named new Randolph magistrate

Mike Dyer

ELKINS — A longtime sheriff’s deputy is being appointed to the open Randolph County magistrate position.

Mike Dyer will fill the remainder of George M. “Mike” Riggleman’s term, Circuit Judge David Wilmoth told The Inter-Mountain.

“I am happy to announce Mike Dyer has been appointed as Randolph County magistrate to fill the unexpired term of Mike Riggleman,” Wilmoth said. “I would like to thank all the ones who expressed an interest in the position. I chose Mike from among 15 people who contacted me regarding their interest. It was a difficult decision, as all the candidates were qualified and each had their own strengths.

“I believe Mike will do an excellent job as magistrate. He is a respected member of the community and has demonstrated the qualities I think will serve him well as magistrate. He expressed a sincere interest in continuing to serve the residents of Randolph County. His motivation to serve others was an important factor in my decision.

“I congratulate Mike and wish he and his wife Kelli and their family the best as he begins this new role,” Wilmoth said.

Riggleman retired last week. The term will expire Dec. 31, 2020.

Dyer said he is grateful to be appointed and looking forward to the challenge.

“First of all I would like to thank God for the opportunity to fill this appointment and for his safety over the past 21 years where I have served the citizens of Randolph County as a deputy sheriff,” Dyer told The Inter-Mountain.

“I started my career Nov. 1, 1997 under Sheriff Paul Brady. During my career I’ve had the privilege to work under Sheriff Jack Roy, and currently Sheriff Mark Brady. All three have been great to work for and have taught me valuable lessons through my career. Each brought different leadership styles and perspectives from which to learn,” he said.

“I am humbled to receive this appointment from Judge David Wilmoth. It is truly an honor to continue to serve my community in this capacity, as magistrate. Lastly I would like to thank my family for their support in this decision as we begin a new chapter in our lives. I look forward to serving the Randolph County community this year, and hopefully years to come,” Dyer said.

Dyer joins Ben Shepler and Rob Elbon as Randolph County’s magistrates. Riggleman had served as magistrate for 18 years.

Starting at $3.92/week.
