Man killed in Norton house fire

NORTON — A man died in a weekend structure fire in Norton, officials said.

Crews from the Coalton Volunteer Fire Department first responded to the scene after receiving a call at approximately 11:40 a.m. Saturday.

Once on site, firefighters encountered fire inside a one-story home. Officials say the fire was confined to one part of the house.

Only the man was in the house at the time of the fire and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation by the Coalton Fire Department and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal.

“When we arrived on scene the fire was confined to the room of origin, which was where the fatality occurred,” Coalton Fire Chief Justin George told The Inter-Mountain Monday.

“Right now we can’t release any other information as the investigation is ongoing,” George said.

The Elkins Fire Department, Junior Fire Department, Belington Fire Department, Randolph County Emergency Squad and Randolph County Sheriff’s Department were all on scene during the fire to assist.
