ELKINS — A man was arrested for allegedly shoplifting at a local store, police said.

Caleb Lee Goodwin, 32, is currently being held in Tygart Valley Regional Jail.

According to a release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on Dec. 23, deputies received a call from Randolph E-911 in reference to active shoplifting taking place at the Elkins WalMart. The West Virginia State Police also responded at the scene.

Officers were told that store personnel was watching a man “cut open merchandise from its original packaging and conceal the items,” the release states. Officers then confronted the man and asked if he had an ID. Goodwin reportedly said no, and gave a false name.

“While advising me of his name, he was hesitant, and paused to think of what his name was,” according to the report. Randolph E-911 was then unable to locate a valid ID with the name and date of birth he provided.

Goodwin then gave a second false name, and then eventually gave his true name, the release states. “It was later determined that the defendant lied about his name twice because he had an active felony capias through Randolph County Circuit Court,” according to the release.

The total cost of the merchandise which Goodwin was allegedly concealing was $557.90, the release states.

Starting at $3.92/week.
