Philippi Elementary dismisses early due to gas leak

PHILIPPI – Philippi Elementary School in Barbour County dismissed students early today due to a gas leak found in the school, officials said.

According to a Facebook post from Barbour County Schools, Philippi Elementary dismissed their students at 10 a.m. due to the gas leak . No other schools in Barbour County were affected.

Students were relocated next door to Philippi Middle School for safe pick-up by buses and parents. The buses ran their normal bus routes.

“Safety is our top priority, and we appreciate your cooperation,” the Barbour County Schools Facebook post read. “Please stay tuned for further updates.”

Barbour County Board of Education Superintendent Eddie Vincent told outlets that the early dismissal was “out of an abundance of caution” and that it is expected that students can return to Philippi Elementary on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
