KERENS — D Jay Miller claimed his first career Super Late Model Feature victory last Friday at Elkins Raceway.
Miller jumped the point at the outset of the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, but drifted too high in turn four on lap two as Shaun Poling blasted by.
On the next circuit, Poling broke loose in turn four as Miller grabbed the spot back. Miller continued to show the way but Billy Holbert was hot on his tail. Holbert continued to peek under Miller but was turned away at each attempt. Miller, driving the Swecker Engineering No. 37, would claim his and car owner Tommy Pennington’s first career Late Model win. Holbert crossed in second. Cody Hardesty held off Andy Bond for third and Bob Gordon finished fifth.
In the Budweiser Fastrak Late Models, Trey Watson was the early pace setter and Derrick Shaw and Brent Trimble were close behind. Trimble snagged second on go round 10. Trimble began to apply pressure to Watson as the duo were side-by-side on lap 11.
On the next circuit, Trimble muscled his way by Watson for the lead. The Paint by Grover No. 32 machine driven by Trimble notched his third straight victory. Watson, Derrick Shaw, Kris Southern (in his first outing) and Donnie Dotson filled out the top five.
Phill Jeffries had been close in the UMP Modifieds, but something kept getting in the way each week. Three-time winner Jamie McCloud threw everything at Jeffries but could not make a serious challenge for the lead. After each restart, Jeffries turned McCloud back. The Dingus Lumber No. J4 would drive on for his first win since June of last year. McCloud had to settle for second. Mike Murphy, Matthew Chenoweth and Michael Moreland completed the top five.
Newcomer in the class, Randy Bise, held the point at the first stage of the Holbrook on the Hill Street Stock finale. Josh Rovello took over on lap four, only to have James Swenskie in the Frosty’s Pre Owned Autos No. 61C secure the spot on lap seven and drive on for his fourth trip to victory lane. Jamie Keene came up a little short and finished second. Rovello was third, Bise fourth and Brian Youtzy fifth.
Dusty Harper, driving the Boondocks Sports Shop No. MC73, notched his second straight Edge Hot Mod feature as he bested Todd Simmons (in Ethan Boram’s No. 17), Dustin Isner, Daniel Helmick and Robert Radcliff (in Mike Collins No. 7C).
Brad Currence stayed undefeated in the Mini Mod Junior Class as he won his 10th race, ahead of Kolby Sullivan, Jake Casto, and Cole Tasker. Declan Carpenter did not start.
George Casto III collected his second consecutive Senior Class first-place trophy.
Following Casto were Gunner Binns, Noah Whited, Alexis Cooper, Blake Runyon and Jakob Barrett.
The month of August is getting full of highlights. This week, the Fastrak Late Models are in the spotlight.
A second Autograph and Picture Night will be held on Aug. 9, while the rescheduled bicycle races (kids must wear helmets) is set for Aug. 16, followed by the Season Championship on Aug. 23.
