Jackets use TD with :10 left in 39-36 victory

BUCKHANNON — Austin Hensley connected with Isiah Scott on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds left as West Virginia State claimed a wild 39-36 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday in Mountain East Conference play at Cebe Ross Field.

Scott had scored on a 31-yard pass with 1:35 left in the game to give the Yellow Jackets a 32-29 advantage.

But the Bobcats answered when Lawrence Brown hauled in a 54-yard reception from Jarrett Northrop with 1:04 remaining to take a 36-32 cushion.

State scored first in the contest when Zach Pate hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass with 19 seconds left in the first quarter.

A 5-yard touchdown run by Dant’e Jones capped off a nine-play, 57-yard drive to give the visitors a14-0 lead with 9:07 left in the second quarter.

Wesleyan, however, scored twice before the halftime break to take a narrow 15-14 lead into the locker room as Northrop hit Chelo Teneval from 14 yards out and Kenny Lewis Jr. for a 42-yard connection with just :36 left in the half.

Trailing 22-14 after three quarters, State took a 25-22 advantage on a 2-yard run by Jones, which was answered by 32-yard hook up between Northrop and Lewis Jr. with just 2:22 left in the contest and set up the wild finish.

Hensley ended the game with 382 yards through the air on 28 of 54 passing with three touchdowns for State (6-2, 6-1 MEC).

He connected with Tyrone Lyte eight times for 118 yards and Scott seven times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Zach Pate had five receptions for 72 yards and a score. Jones ran for 25 yards on six carries with two touchdowns in the win.

Northrop completed 24 of 45 pass attempts for 376 yards for Wesleyan (1-7, 1-6). He had four touchdown passes .

Tre Gylley hauled in six passes for 91 yards, Lewis Jr. had three receptions for 77 yards and two scores and Chelo Teneval andBrown collected 73 and 63 receiving yards, respectively.

Wesleyan will travel to Concord at 1 p.m. Saturday for a MEC contest.
