EHS’ Smoak places fifth at state meet

Williams, Everson lead Lady Colts to third-place effort

ONA — Elkins’ Charlie Smoak turned in a top five finish at the state cross country championships held Saturday at Cabell Midland High School.

Smoak, a junior, finished in a time of 16:55.02 to place fifth.

As a team, the Tigers of head coach Matt Lewis placed seventh among the Class AA field with 162 points.

Frankfort won the team title with 54 points. Fairmont Senior, behind race winner Logan Zuchelli (15:57.57), was second with 59.

Junior Lucas Anger placed 24th for the Tigers in a time of 18:05.63. He was followed by teammates Brandon Rossi (51st, 19:53.91), Chris Fry (56th, 20:15.08), Tyler McKisic (58th, 20:21.50), Tyler Burda (60th, 20:25.70) and Hunter Shreve (67th, 21:39.48).

Fry was the lone senior competing for Elkins in Saturday’s race.

In the Class AA girls race, Philip Barbour turned in a third-place showing with 75 points. Fairmont Senior (59) took the team title, while Winfield (65) placed second.

Fairmont Senior’s Lydia Falkenstein won the individual title in 19:21.65.

Elkins was seventh with 158 points.

Junior Audrey Williams and senior Jaycee Everson both placed among the top 10 for the Lady Colts. Williams was fourth in a time of 20:22.27 and Everson was ninth (20:54.84).

Other finishers for PB included Phaedra Payne (26th, 22:14.58), Megan Mitchell (29th, 22:19.44), Alexia Ferber (30th, 22:24.86) and Magnolia Shiflett (66th, 26:15.43).

Elkins’ top finisher was senior Addie Berdine in 13th place in a time of 21:26.42. She was followed by Samantha Sproul (32nd, 22:40.45), Kiley Edwards (43rd, 23:32.20), Holly Harper (58th, 25:04.09), Kaia Miller (60th, 25:13.3) and Natalie Sutton (62nd, 25:20.39).

Berdine was the lone senior for the EHS girls.

In the Class A girls race, Tucker County placed seventh with 140 points. Williamstown (26) cruised to the team title and was followed by Doddridge County (92).

Freshman Katie Hicks led the Lady Mountain Lions by placing 10th in a time of 21:31.05. Other finishers for Tucker County included Erin Chambers (27th, 22:26.36), Hannah Hardy (40th, 24:08.28), senior Karlee Smith (42nd, 24:19.25), senior Addison Buckley (56th, 25:53.40), Brianna Gooden (57th, 25:58.95) and senior Alaira Hudson (60th, 26:12.68).

Williamstown’s Ella Hesson was the top individual finisher with a time of 20:19.67.
