PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour finds itself one win away from returning to the state tournament for the second straight season.

The Lady Colts host Herbert Hoover tonight at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park in the Class AA-A Region II Championship.

The contest will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the boys title game between Herbert Hoover and Grafton, which starts at 5 p.m.

Philip Barbour, which is undefeated at home this season, made history in 2020 with its first-ever state tourney appearance in girls soccer, and did so again this fall by compiling a school-best 14 victories.

The Lady Colts feature five seniors in the lineup, a majority playing a key role in four straight sectional crowns — the latest coming in a 3-1 win over Liberty on Saturday.

Seniors include Audrey Williams, Gracie Miller, Lydia Phillips, Graylin Floyd and Sara Simon, one of the state’s top softball players who stepped in at goalkeeper this season and has recorded 48 saves.

Sophomore twin sisters Braylyn Sparks and Arrington Sparks lead the squad in scoring. Braylyn has 24 goals, followed by Arrington with 14 and Phillips with 13.

Sophomore Caylee Simons has contributed nine, including two in Saturday’s sectional title win.

The Lady Huskies enter the match 9-10-1 and advanced by defeating Elkins, 3-2, in double-overtime.

Courtney Dunbar had the game-winning goal for Hoover.
