Prep soccer sectionals set to begin

EHS girls host Braxton tonight

ELKINS — Top-seed Elkins begins Class AA-A, Region II, Section 2 tournament action this evening at home.

The Lady Tigers (13-2-2) face fourth-seed Braxton County (9-8-0) for a 6 p.m. semifinal match at Tiger Stadium.

“We have played really good soccer heading into the postseason,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said. “We bounced back from a tough loss at Philip Barbour with two wins last week, so we have momentum going into sectional play.”

The teams met back on Oct. 4 with Elkins taking a 12-0 victory.

Tonight’s victor faces either second-seed Herbert Hoover or No. 3 Lewis County in the championship match at the site of the highest-remaining seed.

“It’s a new season and you have to be prepared to play each game,” Cutright added.

In the other half of the section, Philip Barbour (14-4-1) is the top seed and entertains the winner of Tuesday’s match between No. 5 Liberty at No. 4 Grafton at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Second-seed Lincoln hosts No. 3 Robert C. Byrd in Thursday’s other semifinal, with the victors battling at noon on Saturday at the highest-remaining seed.

In boys Class AA-A, Region II, Section 2 play, Elkins is the second seed and hosts Herbert Hoover at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Tigers enter the contest with a 9-6-2 mark. They defeated the homestanding Huskies, 2-1, back in September.

Philip Barbour, meanwhile, is the fourth seed in the Class AA-A, Region II, Section 1 tourney and entertains No. 5 Notre Dame at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Colts handed the Irish a 6-2 setback on Oct. 8 at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.

The winner travels to top-seed Robert C. Byrd at 6 p.m. Thursday, while No. 3 Lincoln visits No. 2 Grafton in the other semifinal.

The highest-seed remaining will host the title game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Starting at $3.92/week.
