Successful state meet concludes for area swimmers
B-U boys relay team wins title; EHS’s Anger garners a second place
MORGANTOWN — A successful state meet concluded for area swimmers Friday at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center.
Elkins High School sophomore Isaac Anger, who won the gold in the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday, placed second in the 100 breaststroke as Charleston Catholic’s Matthew Smith turned in a time of 58.46 to edge Anger’s effort of 58.63.
Anger had turned in the top preliminary time of 58.55 earlier in the day.
The Buckhannon-Upshur boys 200 freestyle relay squad of Carter Zuliani, Owen Caynor, Reis Leonard and Preston Bennett captured the state title in a time of 1:31.91.
Bennett, who won the 200 freestyle on Thursday, also placed second in the 500 freestyle on Friday in a time of 4:45.30, while Leonard swam to fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.51.
The Tigers were eighth in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Ashton White, Charlie Brown, Andres Masten and Anger turned in a time of 1:38.11.
Elkins’ Rachel Shryock placed fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:26.59) and joined Emma Ujvagi, Raighan Hall Carte and Braelynn Sparks in placing ninth in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Lady Bucs were third in the 200 freestyle relay as Alayna Whitehair, Lillian Fetty, Rylee Yardley and Cadence Vincent finished in 1:44.88.
Vincent broke her own state records in both the 50 and 100 freestyles on Thursday, giving the University of Alabama signee nine state titles in her career.
Whitehair was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.78) and Ujvagi, a freshman, placed sixth in a time of 1:11.66.
In the team standings, the B-U boys placed fifth with 115 points, while Elkins was 11th with 47 and Philip Barbour 21st with six points.
The B-U girls were third with 105 points, Elkins fifth (68) and Philip Barbour 22nd (13).
The Parkersburg South boys and George Washington girls captured the team titles.
