Four B-UHS wrestlers take first-round wins

Elkins’ Twigg, PB’s Rosencrance and Nuzum fall short in state tourney

HUNTINGTON — The high school state wrestling tournament got underway Thursday night inside Mountain State Arena.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Ian Cornett, Liam Garcia, Andrew McDowell and Oscar Blonn all won their first-round matches in Class AAA.

Cornett defeated Spring Valley’s Kayden Maynard by pin fall in the 113-pound class and will face Washington’s Caleb Springstead today in the quarterfinals of the winner’s bracket.

Garcia, last year’s state runner-up at 120, pinned Greenbrier East’s Robert Fugate and meets Cabell Midland’s Isaac Wiseman today.

At 138, McDowell took a 12-3 major decision against Riverside’s Avery Holland. His next opponent today will be Huntington’s Garrin Arthur.

Blonn pinned Jefferson’s Michael Graham at 215 and advanced to face Parkersburg South’s Ayden Morris this afternoon in the quarterfinals.

The Bucs’ Jeremy Jett lost to St. Albans’ Alonzo Long by a 7-5 decision at 106 and Jeremiah Thompson fell by a technical fall to Martinsburg’s Terrell Cofield at 175.

In the Class AA-A portion of the tournament, Elkins freshman Tucker Twigg lost to Point Pleasant’s Gunner Andrick by pin fall at 138. Twigg faces Greenbrier West’s Jon Painter today in the consolation bracket.

Philip Barbour’s Kylen Rosencrance and Marshall Nuzum also lost first-round matches on Thursday night.

Rosencrance fell to Fairmont Senior’s Bryce Nichols by pin fall at 106 and now meets Poca’s Nick Graley in today’s consolation bracket, while Nuzum also lost by pin fall to Berkeley Springs’ Aidan Cain at 150. He will face Liberty-Raleigh’s Isaac Williams today in the consolation portion of the tournament.

Wrestling resumed this morning and concludes with Saturday’s championship rounds.
