Is WVU or Miami of Ohio really ‘The Cradle of Coaches?’

MORGANTOWN — Every year around this time I hear from my good buddy in Fairmont, Michael Spevock, suggesting that this will be the year we finally jump into the car for our tour of North Central West Virginia, focusing on the towns and houses that produced the densest concentration of great football coaches you can find anywhere. It’s something we’ve talked about but have never done, but this may just be the year, for a spark to ignite it has been lit in the most unlikely of places — the first-round matchup on Saturday in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships. The ...

Maxx Yehl’s 12 strikeouts leads to WVU’s Big 12 series win over Baylor

MORGANTOWN — One of the biggest returners and wins of the offseason for West Virginia baseball was the return of pitcher Maxx Yehl. Yehl is solidifying himself as West Virginia baseball’s ace, and he pitched a gem in the rubber match against Baylor. Yehl struck out 12 batters and pitched the longest out of any starter this season, pitching eight innings, leading to the Mountaineers’ 8-0 win over the Bears. Yehl helped WVU pick up its first Big 12 conference series win, and it still hasn’t lost a series all season, winning its fifth series. The Mountaineers are now 2-1 in ...

From sour to sweetness

MORGANTOWN — The following will likely leave a sour taste in your mouth. For some players on the 12th-ranked WVU women’s basketball team, that’s the idea. First, there is the sweet part, which is to say the Mountaineers (27-6) will find out Saturday if they will host the opening rounds of the upcoming NCAA tournament. After winning the Big 12 tournament with a 62-53 victory against then-No. 10 TCU, WVU is in a great position to be named a host for the first time since 1992, when the tournament fielded just 48 teams. “It’s a coaches’ dream, in a way, you have a vision and ...
