ELKINS — The high school basketball seasons have been put on ice this week but several area squads remain in the latest West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association (WVSACA) polls. The Buckhannon-Upshur boys are eighth in Class AAAA and Tucker County is seventh in Class A. The ...

McCarthy comes home to coach the Pittsburgh Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The tears started early for Mike McCarthy. Really early. Considering the setting, it was hard to blame him. There the kid who grew up rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers from his family’s home in the city’s Greenfield neighborhood was on Tuesday, sitting on dais wearing a black suit with a gold tie, a Steelers pin affixed to his lapel. The job McCarthy always wanted, but never let himself imagine he would get, his at last. “I thought I’d at least be able to get started,” the new Steelers head coach said, trying unsuccessfully to choke back his emotions ...

BAKER — Class A, No. 9 East Hardy placed five players in double figures and drained 13 treys in taking an 84-43 win over Tygarts Valley Friday in Potomac Valley Conference action. The Bulldogs dropped to 5-7 on the setback. They were slated to visit Union on Tuesday but that contest was postponed until Monday. The girls contest between the schools was also postponed to Feb. 11. Gideon Good led the Cougars in Friday’s win with 22 points, followed by Evan Hamilton and Mason Hamilton with 15 apiece, Joseph Price with 13 and Aubrey McCullough with 12. WVU flips the running back room

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia running back Tye Edwards lined up behind center with just a few yards until the end zone. Edwards took the handoff from quarterback Nicco Marchiol, behind extra linemen, and punched it in for the go-ahead overtime touchdown against Pitt in the Backyard Brawl. The best moments from the 2025 season were when backs like Diore Hubbard was moving bodies against Houston, or Cyncir Bowers caught the checkdown, taking off for a long touchdown against Arizona State. But now, all the running backs who were crucial to the 2025 season are gone. Jahiem White is in ...

WVU men fall to Arizona

MORGANTOWN — Somewhere between Brayden Burries’ relentlessness and his teammates’ ability to rebound and move the ball, West Virginia’s chance of pulling off a major upset Saturday was quickly extinguished. Burries, a freshman from San Bernardino, Calif., finished with 22 points and was 4 of 8 from 3-point range, as top-ranked Arizona ran past the Mountaineers, 88-53, inside a sold-out McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. It was West Virginia’s fourth consecutive loss against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, with this one getting out of hand early, as the Wildcats (20-0, 7-0 ...

Lady Mountaineers earn win

MORGANTOWN — Maybe the quickest eight-point burst of the season gave the West Virginia women’s basketball team a cushion on Saturday night. Sydney Woodley and WVU’s defense made it stick against BYU. No. 22 WVU improved to 6-0 on the season in true road games following a 91-77 victory against BYU inside the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. The Mountaineers (17-4, 7-2 Big 12) have now won four of their last five games and are within a half-game of both TCU and Baylor for first place in the Big 12 standings at the halfway mark of the conference’s regular season. Both Baylor and ...
