Dynamite removed from Tygart Hotel; Streets re-opened

Local law enforcement block off the intersection of Davis Avenue and Third Street.

UPDATE: The dynamite has been removed and the streets have been opened back to traffic, officials said.

ORIGINAL POST: Workers in the old Tygart Hotel in downtown Elkins have discovered old dynamite while working, according to Elkins City government spokesperson Sutton Stokes. He said the area of Davis Avenue, between Second and Third streets, needed to be evacuated.

“Please evacuate/avoid area near Davis Avenue between Second and Third until further notice,” a statement from the city stated.

Stokes said members of the Elkins Fire Department and the Elkins City Police are on scene.
