Battlers take 9-6 victory over Salem
NUTTER FORT– The Alderson Broaddus University baseball team claimed a 9-6 win over Salem University Friday afternoon at Frank Loria Memorial Field.
The Battlers improved to 1-4 with the win, while the Tigers fell to 4-6.
Ryan Varley (1-0) got the win for ABU in 4 1/3 innings of relief. He allowed one run on three hits, striking out five and walking three.
Kyle Sears, the second of five pitchers used by Salem, was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Vincenzo Rauso and Lane Casto each had two hits and two RBIs for the Battlers.
Lead-off man Tyler Amedure was 2 for 2, walked three times and scored four runs.
Sophomore Austin Whetzel led the way offensively for the Tigers as he notched two hits and two RBIs with one run scored.
ABU started off hot as it generated three runs off two hits and one error on the Tigers for a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Salem answered in the bottom of the first with a run as Whetzel doubled down the left- field line to score senior Jimmy Cramer to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the top of the second, the Battlers added two more runs to push its lead to 5-1 as Casto singled in Rauso and Tylyn James knocked in Casto.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Tigers produced their best offensive attack as they scored four runs. Junior Albert Cartenuto scored on a passed ball, Whetzel hit a fielder’s choice to score senior Harrison Hollis, junior Tyler Ault crossed the plate on a passed ball and Jones doubled to score Whetzel to tie the game at 5-5.
But ABU tacked on a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to open up a 9-5 lead.
Rauso’s two-run double highlighted the fifth-inning scoring.
Salem added its last run in the bottom of the eighth as Ault drove in Tyler D’Alessandro to make it 9-6.
The Battlers will return to Frank Loria Memorial Field at noon on Monday as they will battle UVa.-Wise in a non-conference doubleheader.
