Fix our problems first

International law requires asylum seekers to seek refuge in the next adjacent country. If you travel through several countries to get to a place you prefer, you are simply moving and are no longer protected by asylum laws and should not be allowed into our country without filing the proper immigration paperwork and waiting to be accepted in. Can someone please explain why we are accepting people from China, El Salvador, India,Russia and various African countries into our country while they await an asylum hearing that could take up to three years or more do to the immense backlog ...

Reader: Built-up stress needs to be released

In 1976, a movie came out by the name of “Network.” A movie about a broadcaster that learns that he may be let go from the TV station where he works. On one evening broadcast he expressed his frustrations. The last line of his rant was; “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!”  Do I hear a second on that emotion? Sixty million dollars to supply the Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.  The vast majority goes towards military use. We are sending this over while our own military is depleting. Don’t go to the president or general to verify. Just ask any ...

Delegate: W.Va. is in need of CIT

There are bipartisan efforts to increase West Virginia’s economic development. These efforts were reflected by our politicians, educators, and business leaders successfully persuading LG, an international corporation, to bring their operations to West Virginia. We must develop better methodologies in how we handle West Virginia’s preeminent issues, which are behavioral health and substance use disorders (SUD). So, what is CIT, and how will it add to improving West Virginia’s economic viability? CIT stands for Crisis Intervention Teams. CIT programs strive to strengthen our ...

Residents offer views on Corridor H route

As property owners in Thomas, we have been trying to learn as much as we can about the pros and cons of the alternative routes of the planned Parsons-to-Davis section of Corridor H. Understanding both that there is a need for this section and also that its construction will inevitably bring lasting changes to the unique character of the area, we are interested in comparing the revised original alignment crossing the Blackwater Canyon (ROPA) with the proposed northern route (Blackwater Avoidance Alternative). Based on the arguments we have heard and read, we have found the Blackwater ...

Vital campaigns may affect presidency

Iowa and New Hampshire are now out of the way. Obviously, the campaign for president is getting all the attention. But there are other potentially vital campaigns just starting. They may play a significant role in who is the next president. Those are races for members of the U. S. House of Representatives. Why so? In the unsettled political environment today where polls change near daily, third parties may make an appearance, independent candidates are floating trial ballons and No Labels continues to work on access to more state ballots. The result could be that no presidential ...

Reader agrees with W.Va.’s rankings

In response to the editorial on families published in the Jan. 17 edition of The Inter-Mountain, I would like to share the following things on the rankings, which in my opinion were correct about West Virginia. 1. We lack reliable internet in all 55 counties, making it difficult for business, schools or even for state residents in their homes to look up something or pay a bill online. 2. We lack good roads to get younger residents in. Look how long it is taking to complete Corridor H. 3. Look at Belington and Philippi in Barbour County. Look at Parsons and Davis in Tucker County. ...
