Beverly man charged with child abuse
BEVERLY — A Beverly man has been arrested after allegedly picking a 7-year-old up by the neck and aggressively whipping the child with a belt.
Christopher Andrew Cooper has been charged with child abuse resulting in injury, a felony. Bond was set at $35,000 cash only by Randolph County Magistrate Mike Dyer.
According to the criminal complaint, prepared by Deputy Rocky C. Hebb of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, the officer received information that a 7-year-old juvenile “had obtained bodily injury” from “aggressive whipping with a belt.”
Hebb spoke with Cooper, who allegedly confessed to grabbing the juvenile, picking the child up by the neck, carrying the juvenile “about five feet.” Cooper also allegedly said he “smacked” the child “with a belt causing bodily injury,” the complaint states.
Cooper also allegedly told the officer that he “was too rough” with the child and that “he did ‘cross the line’ from just discipline,'” according to the complaint.
