Reader wants to see balanced editorials

Thank you for continuing to publish the balanced, fact-based, and insightful news reporting and also the occasional editorial and special interest pieces of Steven Allen Adams. His work is one of the key reasons I continue to subscribe to the Inter-Mountain. Adams presents fair, balanced and neutral accounts in his news reporting, and fair and balanced editorial writing in his opinion and special interest pieces. These two types of writing, news reporting and editorial writing, are very different, and serve different purposes; too often, though, they are confused or thought to be the ...

Reader opposes city cameras system

The City of Elkins recently accepted nearly $1 million in funding for “public safety technologies.” These technologies will include upgraded body cameras and dash cameras for the police department as well as a city-wide camera surveillance system. I sat down recently with Police Chief Bennett and City Clerk Sutton Stokes to discuss the details of this system. There has been a lot of confusion and misunderstanding of what the camera system is capable of and what it will be used for. Firstly, these are not traffic cameras. It is a violation of state law for law enforcement to charge ...

Disputing Warner’s 2020 election claims

I write in response to West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner’s guest editorial in the Dec. 14 issue of the Inter-Mountain. Secretary Warner concludes that the 2020 Presidential election was “improperly influenced by federal officials” and therefore was “stolen”. As evidence of this he relies heavily upon a May 10, 2023, U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee report. The report Secretary Warner refers to is actually an interim staff report prepared for the Committee’s Republican members. It is a patently political document and is not a final report from a full ...

Letter to ‘dear child’

After my younger daughter came home from school with a Christmas wish list, I was fairly quick to tell her this wasn’t what Christmas was about: My dear child, I’ll bet by now, you are really beginning to wonder what you will be getting for Christmas. Well, I am beginning to wonder also. I am glad you have a Christmas list. Everybody should have a dream! However, Christmas is about the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is about how Jesus was born in a manger in a stable, many years ago in Bethlehem. He was born to die, and take our sins away. Christmas is a time ...

Veteran appreciates lights at memorial

I am a Vietnam veteran and would like to thank Mike Elza and Kathy Vance for the fantastic job they did with the lights and decorations at the Elkins All-Veterans Memorial. It is beautiful and a joy to look at! I hope that this kind of respect and dedication can continue. Also, not to disrespect “Rosie the Riveter,” but I hope that the statue that is planned for her will be separate from the All-Veteran Memorial, some place all her own. Chuck Alwine Coalton

Reader finds irony in transparency talk

Re: “Foundation working on transparency”, page 1, Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, by Steven Allen Adams. “The foundation voted to go into executive session to talk privately about what a meeting and transparency policy should look like”, page 1, The Inter-Mountain, Nov. 29, 2023. With deep respect to all parties, one has to enjoy this perhaps accidental irony. Carol Denney Elkins
