Elkins boys turn in dominating effort to win regionals; Girls place second

ELKINS — The Elkins High School boys and girls cross country teams qualified for the state meet after strong performances in the Class AA, Region II Championships held Thursday afternoon at Davis & Elkins College.

The Tigers, who entered the meet rated fourth in the state, put on a dominating showing as the first four runners to cross the finish line donned the orange & black.

EHS totaled just 18 points to easily outdistance Lewis County (52) and Liberty-Harrison (59). Lincoln (107) and Robert C. Byrd (130) rounded out the team scoring.

The Minutemen also secured a state berth.

Sophomore Josh Bodkins won the individual title in a time of 18:56.9, while junior Gavin Brown was second in 19:19. Tiger teammates Trevor George, a freshman, and sophomore Ben Tenney placed third and fourth, respectively, in times of 19:19.9 and 19:59.2.

Julia Biola placed fourth to lead the EHS girls in Thursday’s regional meet.

Junior Johnathan Dean rounded out the Elkins scoring in eighth (20:33.5).

“Our boys wanted to take those top four spots and put five scorers on the medal stand,” EHS coach Scott Biola said. “Each of them did their jobs and achieved a team goal they set for themselves back in August by winning the meet.”

Other finishers for the Tigers were Aaron Knight (13th, 21:15.4) and Preston Nixon (21st, 22:07).

Liberty’s Austin Shuman rounded out the top five finishers with an effort of 20:17.3.

The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, finished as regional runner-ups to earn a state spot.

The Lady Tigers’ Emilia Tenney turned in a fifth-place effort on Thursday.

Braxton County tallied 36 points, followed by Elkins (35) and RCB (64).

Elkins had three runners place among the top 10 as freshman Julia Biola was fourth (23:38.0), freshman Emilia Tenney fifth (23:56.8) and junior Mallory Bennett eighth (24:48.1).

Sophomore Delia White (11th, 25:43.1) and sophomore Emma Gilbert (12th, 26:17.2) rounded out the Lady Tiger scoring, with sophomore Mya Mendelson placing 18th (28:00.1) and junior Cathrynne Tenney 19th (28:28.2).

Liberty’s Julia Angiulli won the individual title in a time of 22:57.3, while Braxton County’s Laura Cain (23:13.9) and Addison Lloyd (23:21.6) followed.

“The boys and girls came out ready, determined and goal-oriented and owned their course today,” EHS coach Amanda Carter said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with their performances.”

The state meet takes place Saturday, Oct. 28, at Cabell Midland High School in Ona. The Class AA girls race is set for noon and the boys at 12:45 p.m.
