Co-regional finals on tap this week for girls

ELKINS — Co-regional finals are on tap this week for girls basketball as teams look to punch their tickets to the state tournament.

In one Class AAA, Region II co-final, Elkins entertains Philip Barbour at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

It will be the first time the Lady Tigers have hosted a regional final in 28 years.

Elkins (17-7) captured its first sectional title since 2008 in a 34-32 win over visiting Robert C. Byrd on Thursday evening.

The 14-8 Lady Colts, meanwhile, lost to top-ranked East Fairmont, 58-48, in Friday night’s section 1 title game.

Philip Barbour, which lost to the Lady Tigers, 49-42, on Feb. 6, was last year’s state runner-ups.

In Wednesday’s other Region II co-final, East Fairmont hosts Robert C. Byrd.

The remainder of the Class AAA co-regional matchups on Wednesday include Hampshire at Weir and North Marion at Keyser in Region I, Westside at Lewis County and Sissonville at PikeView in Region III and Ripley at Wayne and Logan at Nitro in Region IV.

Class A co-regional action will be held on Tuesday, as Tucker County (18-5) hosts Pendleton County (11-14) and Pocahontas County (12-11) entertains East Hardy (8-15) in Region II play.

The Lady Mountain Lions cruised past East Hardy, 50-19, to take the section 1 crown.

Tucker County swept the Lady Wildcats during the regular season.

The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, defeated Pendleton County, 52-49, in the section 2 title game as sophomore Calli Propst scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Olivia Vandevender chipped in 14 points, Allyson Taylor grabbed 13 boards and Shayla Bennett had 11 caroms and four assists.

East Hardy and Pocahontas County split their two regular-season games.

In the Class AA, Region II co-finals on Wednesday, Petersburg (14-9) entertains Braxton County (11-14) and Frankfort (4-19) visits Trinity.

The Lady Vikings defeated Frankfort, 54-33, to capture the section 1 title.

Class AAAA co-regional action is set for Thursday.
