ELKINS — When area teams resume play on the basketball court, the Elkins and Tygarts Valley girls will do so as ranked teams.

The Lady Tigers, winners of six straight games, are ninth in The Associated Press’ first regular-season Class AAA poll, released on Monday.

Elkins and first-year coach Courtney Roth are 6-1, the lone loss coming to Southern (Md.) in the season opener.

Southern’s resume is quite impressive against state foes, as the Lady Rams own wins over Class A, No. 2 Tucker County, Class AAAA, No. 2 Morgantown and Class AAA top-ranked Wayne.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Robert C. Byrd this evening, weather pending.

Tygarts Valley’s Summer Lewis-Smith goes up for a layup attempt during last week’s game against Cameron.

Adam Smith’s Lady Bulldogs (6-2) check in at eighth in the Class A ranks, owning wins against No. 7 River View and Webster County.

Tygarts Valley’s losses have came to Tucker County and No. 3 Cameron.

The Lady Bulldogs are slated to host Pendleton County on Friday evening.

Pocahontas County, meanwhile, is ranked fifth in Class A.

For the boys, Tucker County (8-0) remained atop of the Class A ranks after outlasting No. 2 Tug Valley in overtime this past Saturday, while Tygarts Valley (4-1) is eighth and East Hardy (4-2) fifth.

The Bulldogs’ lone blemish is a setback at Tucker County.

Tygarts Valley and the Mountain Lions have scheduled road games on Friday at Pendleton County and East Hardy, respectively.
