Lady Vikings stay alive with 12-2 win over Liberty-Raleigh
SOUTH CHARLESTON — Petersburg stayed alive in the Class AA state tournament after capturing a 12-2 win in five innings over Liberty-Raleigh in an elimination game Wednesday at Little Creek Park.
The Lady Vikings (22-11) face Logan at 10:30 a.m. today in another elimination contest, with the victor moving on to face Oak Glen, which advanced to the title contest with a 3-0 win over Logan in Wednesday’s late game.
Leading 4-0, Petersburg erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning.
Ella Markwell’s three-run homer highlighted the surge.
Miley Tingler was 3 for 4 in the win, including hitting an RBI triple in the first.
Shyane Tawney added a pair of hits and an RBI and Ella Chew, Abigail Nettles and Quenlynn Cole also picked up RBIs.
Gracie Carpenter earned the win, going all five innings, giving up six hits fanning one and walking one.
Katie Mullens went 3 for 3 for Liberty, while McKinlea Hill and Allie Bowles had RBIs.
Maddie Cox was saddled with the loss in going all five innings.
Liberty ended the season with an 18-10 record.
The Lady Vikings dropped a 1-0 verdict to Oak Glen earlier in the day to fall into the elimination bracket.
Mattie Carney twirled a two-hitter for the Lady Golden Bears. She struck out 11 and walked three.
Olivia Kimble was the hard-luck loser.
She went all six innings, allowing four hits, fanning four and walking seven.
Tawney had both hits for Petersburg.
Oak Glen scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth when Kayla Wright drew a bases-loaded free pass.
