Bucs finish ninth in overall ‘AAA’ team standings

HUNTINGTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Jacob Smithson and Moorefield’s Isaac Van Meter both placed runner-ups at the high school state wrestling tournament Saturday at Big Sandy Super Store Arena.

Smithson, a junior, lost an 18-5 major decision to Parkersburg South’s Zach Hinzman in the 160-pound title match.

The Bucs’ Julius Hobbs, a sophomore, placed third in the 120-pound class by pinning Devin Doss in the consolation finals.

Hobbs, who was coming off a heart-breaking 4-3 loss to Parkersburg’s Garrett Do nahue in Friday’s championship round semifinals, bounced back with a decision over Wheeling Park’s Masion Richardson in his first match on Saturday.

B-U senior Tyler Cutright was fourth at 138 and fellow senior Austin McCartney and sophomore Breagan Pearson both placed sixth at 126 and 145, respectively.

The Bucs finished ninth in the overall Class AAA team standings with 81 points.

Parkersburg South (248) outdistanced runner-up Wheeling Park (175) to claim the crown.

Van Meter, a sophomore, dropped a 4-0 decision to Braxton County’s Jordan Williams in the Class AA-A 170-pound championship match.

Petersburg senior Alec Burgess placed third at 195, while Thomas Ours was fifth at 126 and Doug Morral fifth at 220.

Burgess pinned Winfield’s J.D. McCallister in the consolation finals.

Point Pleasant captured the Class AA-A team title with 203 points, while Independence was second with 120 points.
