ELKINS — A local church brought a Mountaineer Food Bank truck to town to help those in need.
Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church provided funding for a visit from the Mountaineer Food Bank truck on a rainy Saturday morning Oct. 14.
Cars with family members lined the alleyway behind the church to receive their free boxes of food, filled with hams, bread, cereal, fruit, can goods, milk and desserts.
Nearly 200 boxes of food were loaded into cars and trucks by a host of volunteers from Elkins.
This is the second visit the Mountaineer Food Bank truck has made to Elkins through the support of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Mountaineer Food Bank is a member of Feeding America and the largest emergency food provider in the state of West Virginia.
The church thanks the following volunteers for aiding in the efforts to help end hunger in our community: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Elkins Family Worship Center, First United Methodist Church, Tygart Valley United Way, Davis & Elkins College students and members of the Sig Ep Fraternity.
Mobile pantries provide food to “food deserts” where food accessibility is limited and/or scarce, according to the Mountaineer Food Bank website.
Fresh, healthy food tends to have a short shelf life. To make sure food gets to people as quickly and fresh as possible, they are transported to selected locations and distributed by Mountaineer Food Bank.
Mobile pantries can provide a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and baked goods to people in need.
Hosted by churches, schools, and community centers, a Mobile Pantry can feed between 100 and 1,000 households, officials said.
