Soccer sectionals get underway today
PHILIPPI — Both the Philip Barbour boys and girls soccer squads made it into the Class AA-A, Region II, Section 2 championship game last season, and both will begin postseason play this week in an effort to return to their respective title matches.
In 2018, the Lady Colts bested Elkins for the sectional crown, while PB’s boys team fell to Lewis County in Weston after double overtime couldn’t separate the Big 10 Conference rivals. The Minutemen won on PKs.
In girls action, Philip Barbour will host South Harrison at 6 p.m. today. An earlier meeting between PB and the single-A Lady Hawks resulted in a 7-0 win for the Lady Colts in Lost Creek.
If PBHS wins, it will host the winner of today’s contest between host Elkins (11-6-1) and Lewis County for the sectional championship at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Tigers and Minutemaids battled to a 1-1 draw back on Oct. 3.
Philip Barbour claimed a 2-1 victory at EHS last Tuesday and a 9-0 win over LCHS this past Thursday on George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.
The Philip Barbour boys team wrapped up the regular season with a 1-0 win over the Minutemen on senior night last Thursday at the Colts’ Corral. They are slated to host the winner of Pendleton County vs. South Harrison at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
A win by PB on Tuesday would cue the Colts to hosting the winner of Tuesday’s match in Weston between Elkins and Lewis County for another shot at the crown.
In Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 tournament play, the Buckhannon-Upshur girls and boys are both top seeds and will entertain No. 4 Preston on Tuesday.
The Lady Bucs will take to the field at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys.
