Strong third quarter fuels Tigers over Grafton

GRAFTON — Class AAA, No. 7 Elkins took control in the third quarter to hand Grafton a 64-47 setback Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference action.

Leading 26-25 at the intermission, the Tigers embarked on a 15-2 run in the third quarter, capped off by Ben Baines’ dunk that gave EHS a 41-27 advantage.

Baines had a career-high 16 points on the night.

A 3-pointer by Malachi Watson early in the fourth gave the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 48-31.

Watson finished with 14 points and Tanner Miller added 12. Aaron O’Neill also reached double figures with 12 in getting the start.

JT Veltri had 15 points to lead the Bearcats (3-8).

Elkins (8-4) returns home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to battle No. 4 East Fairmont.
