Elkins harriers earn clean sweep at Clovis invite
ROMNEY — For the second time this season, the Elkins High School girls and boys cross country teams pulled off a clean sweep in the team competitions at the Paul Clovis Invitational on Saturday.
Julia Biola led the way for the EHS girls with a fourth-place finish in 22:03. Mallory Bennett ninth, 23:11) and Emilia Tenney (12th, 23:37) also earned awards for finishing in the Top 15. Delia White (23rd, 25:01) and Mackenzie Miller (24th, 25:07) rounded out the Tiger scorers.
“Mackenzie has really stepped up for us these past two meets,” said EHS coach Scott Biola. “We are only as good as our fifth runner.”
Elkins’ 62 points outdistanced Hampshire’s 83 points to capture the team crown. Other schools competing included Somerset Area (Pa). (109), Frankfort (135), Spring Mills (135), Hedgesville (139), Martinsburg (152), Mountain Ridge (179), Keyser (166) and Berkeley Springs (213).
Somerset Area’s Emily Fisher won the individual race in 20:13.
On the boys side, Elkins’ Josh Bodkins outkicked Hampshire’s Wyatt Thomas to take the individual win in 17:52. Joining Bodkins on the medal stand were teammates Trevor George (third, 18:04), Gavin Brown fourth, 18:07) and Ben Tenney (eighth, 18:56). Johnathan Dean (16, 19:28) was the Tigers’ fifth man.
In total, the EHS boys scored 31 points to beat Frankfort (90), Hampshire (92), Keyser (116), Hedgesville (146), Washington (157), Southern Garrett-Md. (183), Spring Mills (187), Mountain Ridge (233), Martinsburg (236), Somerset Area (258) and Berkeley Springs (284).
“I am very excited for the outcome today as our kids pulled together and stepped up to the challenge,” commented EHS coach Amanda Carter. “They came as a team, strategized as a team, competed as a team, and won as a team!”
The Tiger harriers return to action at the Big 10 Conference Championships on Oct. 12 at Robert C. Byrd High School. The girls race at 4:30 p.m. that day followed by the boys at 5:15 p.m.
