Shryock, EHS girls making a splash

Senior captures two Big 10 titles for Lady Tigers

ELKINS — Rachel Shryock and the Elkins High School girls turned in a dominating effort in winning the Big 10 Conference title Saturday at The Bridge Sports Complex.

Shryock continued her strong senior season for the Lady Tigers as she captured Big 10 titles in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:02.23 and the 500 freestyle (5:33.46).

She also teamed with Emily Durst, Lilly Irons and Lilly Anger to break the Big 10 mark in the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:48.17.

The old mark of 3:54.06 was set by the Elkins state-title winning unit of Samantha Hall, Christa Varner, Kayla Gainer and Delaney Johnson in 2012.

Shryock owns the school record in the 500-yard free style with a time of 5:26.59 which she set last season.

The EHS boys and girls swim teams are among the favorites in the Region III meet slated for 11 a.m. Saturday at The Bridge Sports Complex in Bridgeport.

The Lady Tigers captured the Big 10 team title, while the EHS boys placed third.

Along with Elkins, schools expected to compete in Saturday’s Region III meet include Buckhannon-Upshur, Philip Barbour, Capital, Charleston Catholic, Doddridge County, Grafton, Herbert Hoover, Liberty-Harrison, Lincoln, Notre Dame, PikeView, Riverside, Shady Spring, South Harrison, Robert C. Byrd and Woodrow Wilson.

The state meet takes place Feb. 15-16 at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown.
