Pair of area golfers qualify for states

ELKINS — A pair of area golfers will participate in the high school state tournament slated to be held next week over the Jones Course at Wheeling’s Ogelbay Resort.

Elkins’ Lucas D’Angelo and Tygarts Valley’s Avery Row-Sponaugle qualified individually in Class AA and A, respectively, in regional play.

East Hardy’s Jordan Teets also qualified individually in Class A.

Eight teams are entered in each class in the 36-hole tournament, which gets underway Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday.

The Class AAA field includes Cabell Midland, George Washington, Greenbrier East, Hurricane, Martinsburg, University, defending state champion Washington and Wheeling Park.

Row-Sponaugle

Lewis County, which won the Region I tournament, is among the Class AA qualifiers, along with Chapmanville, Hampshire, Nicholas County, Ripley, Shady Spring, Wheeling Central and Williamstown.

Wheeling Central won the title last season as part of single-A.

Vying in Class A will be Petersburg, Gilmer County, Midland Trail, Ravenswood, St. Marys, Tyler Consolidated and Wahama.

Members of the Petersburg squad competing at states include Payton Berg, Willie Minnich, Colton Taylor and Lucas Riggleman.
