Mountaineers picked third in Big 12 baseball poll

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia baseball will start its season with some high expectations. The Mountaineers were announced as No. 3 in the Big 12 in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The conference coaches each vote on the poll and aren’t allowed to vote on their own team. This is the highest ranking for the head coach Steve Sabin’s squad since joining the Big 12 in 2013. The Mountaineers were ranked No. 4 this time last year. WVU finished as the Big 12 regular-season champion and lost to Arizona in the semifinals. In the NCAA Tournament, WVU won the Clemson regional and then lost ...

Lady Tigers rally past Lady Bucs

ELKINS — Elkins mounted a late surge Thursday night in rallying past Buckhannon‑Upshur for a 42–40 victory in Big 10 Conference action at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium. Emma Gilbert delivered the decisive blow, knocking down a clutch 3‑pointer with 20 seconds remaining ...

Mountaineers set to battle Cincinnati

MORGANTOWN — It was just a month ago — Jan. 6 to be exact — when the WVU men’s basketball team put the clamps on Cincinnati’s greatest strength. The Bearcats’ twin towers of 7-foot-1 Moustapha Thiam and 6-11 Baba Miller were held to a combined eight points. Neither one grabbed ...

WVU women’s basketball riding Baylor win into Colorado

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia women’s basketball started off February with a bang, upsetting No. 14 Baylor at home, 70-60. It was a much-needed win after a tough loss to Utah, helped out in the Big 12 standings, moved WVU up to No. 20 in the AP Poll and built on the resume for a higher seed in the NCAA Tournament in March. Now, the challenge is carrying the high after that win into the rest of the month because February is when you want to be playing your best ball with March and the postseason right around the corner. “February is where you get rolling,” Kellogg said. “You ...

WVU women’s celebration after win was special

MORGANTOWN — If a picture is worth a thousand words, then today I am speechless and you can thank the photographer Dale Sparks for giving you this moment so many have prayed for over the years. As we begin here, let me refer you to Sparks’ post-game Facebook post following West Virginia’s conquest of Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Hope Coliseum, for he put into one frame the true essence of what a locker room celebration is all about. Coach Mark Kellogg had just entered the room, presumably following his post-game media session, and walked into a tidal wave of joy, encircled ...

WVU’s linebacker room post Carrico and Wilson

MORGANTOWN — It was hard to be a leader of West Virginia’s 2025 team. The team was new in almost every aspect. There was a new coach, a new coaching staff and a bunch of new players. It’s hard to unite a team like that. There were two players on defense who stepped up, attempting to lead the group. Two players who gave it their all, banged up and fought through it, and were sent out to answer questions after losing a tough one. Linebacker Reid Carrico and Chase Wilson were WVU’s leaders on defense. They led the linebacker room and the defense. Now, the two are gone, creating ...
