HARMAN — With the start of high school spring practices set to begin next week, Harman School is preparing to field a baseball team this season.
“There was growing interest at the school to form a baseball team,” said Jay Auvil, who will coach the squad. “It’s been several years since Harman has played baseball and with several freshmen interested, we decided to go forth with it.”
Auvil, who was a standout player for Elkins High School in the 1990s, said the team currently has 14 games on the 2019 schedule.
“We hope to increase the number of games we play next year,” he said. “But right now, as a first-year program, we know we will go through some growing pains.”
A fundraiser for the Harman baseball team is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the school.
There will be bingo, a white elephant sale and an auction. The concession stand also will be open and monetary donations will be accepted.
“The community and faculty at Harman have been wonderful with their support,” Auvil said. “We’ve had several donations and that’s been great to see.”
The Davis & Elkins College baseball team and head coach Mason Heyne donated equipment and uniforms, which will be refurbished and used by the team this spring.
“I really want to thank Coach Heyne and D&E for all the help,” Auvil said. “They have really been a big help in getting us up and running.”
