ELKINS — Will Knight went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead Post 29 to a 10-8 win over Kingwood Wednesday in American Legion baseball action at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Post 29, which improved to 13-12 with the win, built a 9-1 lead after five innings before post 56 rallied for seven runs in the final two innings to make a game of it.
Brett Smith also had a big day at the plate for Elkins, finishing with two hits and three RBIs. One of Smith’s hits was a three-run home run that put Elkins in front 5-0 after three innings of play. Gage Bibey added two hits and scored four runs for Post 29, while Dustyn Primavero knocked in a run on one hit.
Bibey (2-2) earned the win for Elkins in 5 2/3 innings pitched. He scattered eight hits, struck out five and walked two. Read Schumacher pitched 1/3 of an inning to notch the save.
“We hit the ball well again and (Gage) Bibey pitched a good game for us,” said Elkins Manager Chris George. “I credit Kingwood, though, they fought back in the last couple of innings and made it a close game.”
Chase Setler allowed five runs on seven hits to suffer the loss for Kingwood. Dillon Williams had four hits and two RBIs to lead Post 56 at the plate.
Elkins will return to action on Saturday when it hosts a pair of games at Philip Barbour High School. Post 29 will battle Marietta (Ohio) at 1 p.m. and Garrett County (Maryland) at 6 p.m.
After Saturday’s games, Elkins will return to Robin Harvey Memorial Field on Sunday for a 4 p.m. contest against Romney.
