Elkins girls bested
Surging Lady Warriors earn 51-33 victory
DUNMORE — Pocahontas County improved to 12-2 with a 51-33 win over Elkins on Saturday.
The Class A, No. 7 Lady Warriors have won nine of their last 10 games, with the lone loss coming at Tucker County.
The two squads will battle in a rematch at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Dunmore.
Pocahontas County took control against the Lady Tigers by scoring the game’s first 10 points to lead 12-4 after the first quarter and 16-9 at the halftime break.
The advantage grew to 14, at 32-18, entering the final frame.
Laila Calhoun paced Pocahontas County with 15 points, 11 coming from the free-throw line. She also had 10 rebounds and five steals.
Kira Bircher, Brianna Hefner and Alexa Taylor all added 12 points each.
Bircher also three blocked shots, Hefner four steals and three boards and Taylor four assists.
Sarah Riggleman tossed in 13 points and Susan Riggleman added nine points and six rebounds for Elkins (5-11), which will travel to Philip Barbour at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Cameron 54, TV 35
CAMERON — The Tygarts Valley girls couldn’t overcome a slow start in dropping a 54-35 verdict to Cameron Friday night in WVHIT action.
The Lady Bulldogs (10-4) trailed 16-4 after one quarter and the Lady Dragons increased the lead to 32-15 at halftime.
“We came out sluggish and never got it going,” Lady Bulldogs coach Nancy Lewis said.
Emily Ball scored eight points for TV, while Abi Cabaniss added seven points and 11 rebounds and Courtney Haddix six boards.
Kori Scott bucketed 14 points and Madge Lucey 10 to lead Cameron (11-4).
The Lady Bulldogs will remain on the road in WVHIT play at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Greenbrier West.
