Editor’s note: The following is the first in a series of profiles of “Gridiron Greats” from area high schools. The series will lead up to the publication of The Inter-Mountain’s annual Football Preview and Fall Sports Guide on Aug. 27.
Stephen “Steve” Redd was not only a great multi-sport athlete during his playing days at Philip Barbour High School, but excelled in the classroom and as a leader.
Redd, a 1989 graduate of Philip Barbour, earned Class AAA first-team honors and all-Big 10 Conference laurels during his career with the Colts, playing running back and along the defensive front.
He was also chosen to the All-Mon Valley and all-North Central squads.
Redd also suited up for the Colts in basketball and in track and field, competing in the shot put and discus events, where he earned all-conference accolades as well.

Off the field, Redd served as either president or vice president of his classes and was the student council president during the 1988-89 school year.
He was named Governor of Mountaineer Boys State in 1988 and was West Virginia’s representative to Boys Nation the same year.
After graduating from Philip Barbour, Redd signed to play at West Virginia University as a defensive tackle/nose guard.
During his freshman season, he earned a starting spot for Hall of Fame coach Don Nehlen and recorded 34 total tackles and 4.0 tackles for loss.
During a 28-3 victory over Rutgers in 1990, Redd had a career-high five solo tackles and two tackles for loss.
Redd also established a bench-press school record during his playing days.
An injury derailed his career with the Mountaineers on the playing field but he continued to shine as a leader at the University, serving as student body president during his tenure in Morgantown.
In 2017, Redd was inducted into the first Philip Barbour Hall of Fame class.
