ELKINS – Elkins Post 29’s play on the field in July was as hot as the weather. Now the local American Legion squad looks to carry that momentum into the state tournament.

Post 29, which has a record of 15-3 this month, will begin state play at 1 p.m. Wednesday against Morgantown Post 2 at Potomac State College in Keyser.

Post 2 defeated Elkins in all three meetings during the summer.

“We certainly know what to expect when we play Morgantown,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “We have a lot of respect for their program, and one of the keys for us going into states will be getting off to good start.

“We fell behind (to Morgantown) in the early innings of those losses this season and we need to avoid that on Wednesday.”

Read Schumacher is batting .425 and leads Post 29 with 48 hits this summer.

While Elkins (26-15) went undefeated in claiming the Area 5 title, Post 2 had to rally to earn a spot in the state tourney.

Morgantown (28-7) came out of the loser’s bracket to defeat Bridgeport, 12-2, on Saturday and by a score of 12-9 in Sunday’s Area 2 title game.

The other first-round matchups on Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament include Berkeley County (19-8) vs. South Charleston (27-9-1) at 10 a.m. and Wheeling (25-8) vs. host squad Romney (28-8) at 4 p.m.

Starting at $3.92/week.
